What’s new in roofing?

Green RoofingIt’s green on top!

Owners and architects as well as tenants and the government are gravitating towards environmentally friendly buildings constructed from sustainable design.  Sustainable design and development strive to meet the needs of the present without compromising the quality of life for future generations.  It incorporates the careful consideration of environmental impact, energy use, natural resources and economics.  When applied to roofing, elements of sustainable design are found in green roofing, Energy Star roof products, metal roofing and roofing membranes made of recycled materials.

Prospect Waterproofing Company has substantial experience installing green roofing systems, which include the installation of Extensive and Intensive vegetation systems by American Hydrotech Inc., Henry Co.  and Sika Sarnafil Inc.  As a manufacturer approved membrane installer, Prospect is a single source contractor, who can install and maintain both the installation of the waterproofing membranes as well as the soil overburden and the plant life.

Green roofs are currently growing at 1101 New York Avenue, Anacostia Gateway, Dulles Discovery, The Spectrum, Union Bankshares and U.S. Pharmacopeia among many others.   In 2007, Prospect was honored by the Washington Building Congress with Thermal and Moisture Protection awards for craftsmanship at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute – Janelia Farm and the U.S. Census Headquarters  projects.  Both of these projects included green roofs.  Also, in 2007, the Woodglen Park project, with its green roof, was honored with the Peerless Rockville Preservation Award.

In addition to installing green roofs, Prospect has teamed up with manufacturers of roofing membranes, who meet Energy Star energy efficiency standards.  These include American Hydrotech Inc., Carlisle Syntec, Englert Inc., Firestone Building Products, Gaco Western, GAF Materials Corp., Henry Co., Johns Manville, Neogard, Petersen Aluminum Corp., and Sika Sarnafil Inc.
